Bit depth

« Back to Glossary Index

Bit depth is the number of colors that can be displayed by a digital device. It’s also known as pixel depth or color depth.

Bit depth is measured in terms of the number of 0’s and 1’s, or “bits,” which are used to specify each color. The higher the bit depth, the more colors used in the image and the larger the file size.
